How to keep your mission habits after you come home
On your mission the schedule carried you: there was a time to study, to plan and to go out. When you come home that structure disappears and habits loosen. It is not a lack of character, it is that no one sets the pace for you anymore. The answer is to build your own structure.
Pick only three habits
Trying to recover everything at once usually ends in giving up. Choose three you truly want to keep. Three common ones are daily scripture study, morning exercise and daily planning.
Anchor them to a fixed time
A habit with a time attached is stronger than one with good intentions. Decide when you will do it and put it on the calendar like any other appointment.
Start small
Fifteen minutes of study a day lasts longer than an hour you only manage three times. Start with a version you can hardly fail and grow it over time.
Track your progress
Writing down in a journal what you did and what you learned shows you real progress. It also helps on the days you feel you are getting nowhere.
Use reminders and company
- Set an alert before each important activity.
- Share your goals with someone who walks with you, like a friend or a mission companion.
- Review your week once a week, always on the same day.
If you want a tool built for this, RMPlanner brings together a calendar with reminders, a journal and goals, and Companionship Mode lets you share goals and agenda with someone else.
